Doug's Rant: Teeing Up TikTok, Emoji Emotions, Meta Misery
Back in the day on the Frameable Faces blog I used to do a series of “Doug’s Rants” on social media happenings - some good, some bad, but usually not without opinions…. hehe. I did post a bit of a rant list here about a year ago but bringing back the “Rants” might be a fun thing to do on the regular.
Sometimes it’s good to do a little catch-all stream of consciousness when there’s a few things you’d like to touch on and get off of your chest. Commiserating can be therapeutic, so let’s RANT!
Teeing Up TikTok
I first started on TikTok with Frameable Faces back in November of 2019 and I enjoy it a lot. We’ve had some success there - I’m not sure it’s brought us a lot of new business per se, but our people definitely enjoy them and a few have gotten some nice views - our most was 31k of a group of University of Michigan seniors on campus (one of whom was our daughter Lacey). I started the Virtual Petcations TikTok in May of this year, and I just started the DOUGCOHEN10 TikTok YESTERDAY!!!! I don’t know why I waited so long to do one for me but I think I’m going to have fun with it. My first one is quite spectacular… I’m already getting trolled and duet-ed on it! Hehe… Okay so maybe topic one was more of a shameless plug. Sorry about that… I promise the rest will be nice and angry. Hehe…
Emoji Emotions
I’m sure there’s some hack or shortcut for this, but I just wish my most used emojis on my iPhone stayed available for easy access to the far left of the emoji keyboard. The anxiety I have about straying to use other emojis as a content creator knowing I’ll have to go back manually and find my favorites after they’re simply replaced by the more recent ones makes me nuts. I know - first world problems right? But if you know you know - the struggle is indeed real. I love having more emojis, and even the search function for the emojis is nice - I know this, but I still like to have easy access to the left. Also emojis tend to cause plenty of anxiety in other ways. Some apps tell you what the emoji is when you hover over them on the desktop if you can’t quite always see them clearly, and some don’t. Some apps update their emojis with the new ones Apple rolls out, some don’t and then you have to right click to find the one you want on the desktop - like Mailchimp is extremely limited in their emoji selection and even lump some into different categories. Some smileys don’t render properly on Facebook until you publish the post… grrrr….
Emoji emotions indeed… can any of you relate to this?
Meta Misery
Speaking of Faceboo—-er—-Meta… What mess-a. I want to give a shout out here to Mari Smith and a post of hers that Social Media Examiner shared on Facebook. It’s a great breakdown of the changes that have been happening with Facebook’s strategy for continuing to copy other apps, the metaverse and how the changes affect our content reach, our feed, our pages and a lot more. A really insightful and comprehensive essay. Your head might be spinning at what a cluster Facebook is by the time you’re done reading it, but that’s okay - she basically says writing it made her head spin too. I’ve always said I’ve had a love/hate relationship with Facebook and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon…. Give it a click / read below:
A Few More Things…
I’m struggling to find a lot of signs of intelligent life on Reddit. Just in general…. I swear there’s a culture void over there… Plenty of slurs, immaturity and horrible grammar. More than most. Is it me? Sheesh…
Twitter is annoying AF with treating recommended tweets as NOTIFICATIONS. This really pisses me off. I don’t need to be NOTIFIED that someone tweeted something. And you can only tell them you want to “see less often” as a remedy and then you……..don’t see them less often. Whether this should trigger me or not, it does. Seems Snapchat and Instagram are starting to do this too…?
Oh and another thing about Facebook…. Replays of livestreams are wayyyyyyy out of sync. Audio is frequently off from the video by a solid second, and if you flip the camera forget about it. Makes it pretty much unwatchable. Like really? Such a broken platform.
So, yeah I guess that’s it for now. I’ll start jotting these down in Evernote for the next rant. Share your thoughts (or tips) below on any of this!
