50 Twenty Second Song Snippets For You To Wash Your Hands To During The COVID-19 Pandemic

50 Twenty Second Song Snippets For You To Wash Your Hands To During The COVID-19 Pandemic Blog.png

Well life has certainly changed since my last blog post on Doug’s Music Snobbery. We are battling a pandemic now and we’ve been staying home and staying safe here in Michigan for almost a month as of this post. We are so grateful for everyone still working to protect us, care for us, and keep supplies moving - food, medical and the rest. We are doing our part and we hope everyone takes this seriously to stay home and not spread the COVID-19 virus while the scientists and doctors work on ways to stop this thing and care for the sick.

WASH YOUR HANDS!

Having said all of that, there are many silver linings to this if you look for them. Putting life on a bit of a pause gives us time to slow down and reset. Self care is very important, and being nice to each other and reaching out is too. Diversions are good, staying in the moment is good, and yes, washing your hands is good. We need to wash our hands often to minimize our risk and stop the spread especially if we have to go out! The CDC has given guidelines for washing our hands and the standard that keeps being repeated everywhere is lathering your hands with soap and water and scrubbing them for at least 20 seconds. One of the trends that is going around is the idea of finding a part of a song to sing that is 20 seconds long to help you time it. Enter Doug’s Music Snobbery to contribute to the fight!

I’ve compiled 50 of these song snippets to help you - I’m not saying they are the “only” 50 or THE definitive list, but they are 50 darn good ones and I hope you enjoy them and put them to use! Some are a little longer than 20, none of them are shorter. Some have vocals some don’t. Each one includes the time stamp of the snippet so that the YouTube video starts right at that spot. Many genres are represented and if you feel so inclined comment below at the end with any others you can add! Let’s share this with the world! Remember - once we get on the downside of the curve and restrictions start to ease it will be even MORE important to wash our hands! We can do this. After all, we’re ALL in this together!

These are in no particular order…

50 Song Snippets To Wash Your Hands To

1) 6:10 - 6:30 Hummer - Smashing Pumpkins The end of Hummer just soothes my soul - always has and this may be my favorite 20 seconds. Most of the songs on this list will be songs for you to sing while you wash, but we’ll get a few instrumentals out of the way first and this snippet is a good one to just digest and replay in your head.

2) :44 - 1:06 Raining Blood - Slayer For some aggressive hand washing to maybe the most significant riff in thrash metal history

3) 2:19-2:42 Tom Sawyer - Rush Yes it might be the late great Neil Peart’s finest and most famous moment and this might be purely instrumental, but feel free to sing it anyway - go all out making the percussive sounds and the guitar riffs vocally!

4) :20-:58 Kiss Of Life - Sade You’ll want the extra 18 seconds for Sade to coo in your ear a little longer

5) :00-:23 Peter Piper - Run D.M.C. The beginning of the song with the very first rhyme will get you going - time for a house party…

6) :30-52 Oye Como Va - Santana A little Latin flava with Santana’s seminal cover of the Tito Puente classic

7) 3:42-4:02 Don’t You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds The greatest La la la singalong ever? It’s social (distancing) - demented and sad, but social (distancing).

8) 1:18-1:46 Outshined - Soundgarden Such a great and bonecrushingly heavy chorus!

9) :00-:20 Lively Up Yourself - Bob Marley & The Wailers Another beginning to a jam that will take you away to the islands - kinda, if you put on a pic of a beach and pretend really hard. Either way reggae soothes…

10) 2:15-2:46 Boogie On Reggae Woman - Stevie Wonder While Stevie asks playfully “Can I Play” TWICE during his harp solo - and he’s feelin’ it… I recently watched an amazing Phish cover of this since the band has been livestreaming concerts on Facebook during the lockdown, but I’m glad I had already picked this one for this piece because the Phish version has been in my head and I need Stevie to reclaim it.

11) 2:05-2:35 Tightrope - Stone Roses The somewhat ill-fated/maligned second and last Stone Roses album still has its moments including the fantastic singalong chorus of Tightrope.

12) :00-:25 Stranglehold - Ted Nugent Yes the Motor City Madman is……a madman, but this is still one of the finest moments in rock history in my book.

13) :00-:30 Ain’t Too Proud To Beg The Temptations Sticking with Detroit, I’m struck by the yearning “I KNOW you want to leave me” vocal by David Ruffin here… The Rolling Stones did a fantastic cover which you can use too, but I’m sticking with the Emperors of Soul for this list…

14) :39-1:00 Here Comes My Girl - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers This is Petty at his most passionate in this rising vocal that leads into the chorus! My favorite Petty tune.

15) 6:00-6:22 Eulogy - Tool Anyone who was already was into Tool back when AEnima came out in 1996 remembers these 21 seconds of dramatic power leading into the climax of this epic as they tried to digest the ever growing complexities of new Tool albums.

16) 4:33-5:00 Shame In You - Alice In Chains This part continues a little longer but you can get through the main riff/sequence 4 times for a good hand washing to one of the most sublime moments in the entire AIC catalogue.

17) :00-:35 Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith One of the longer entries on this list but this intro is so dreamy - use it when your hands are a little extra dirty… Maybe the best bass line ever and maybe one of the most iconic movie beginnings ever in Dazed and Confused.

18) :09-:31 Little Martha - The Allman Brothers Band Maybe Duane Allman’s finest moment all by himself just a few weeks before his death.

19) :15-:36 The Devil You Know - Anthrax What a riff… Anthrax made two of their best albums (if not their best) decades into their existence. Your hands should be nice and clean after this…

20) 2:29-2:49 Strobelight - The B-52’s “I’m gonna kiss your eye...” exactly 20 seconds of what made the B-52’s so fun AND so badass in their early days.

21) 2:00-2:20 Helter Skelter - The Beatles Heavy Metal Beatles with a screaming George Harrison solo during the verse that just KILLS.

22) :00-:22 Paul Revere - The Beastie Boys Never fails to deliver - the silliest and most genius autobiographical story of a band ever dropped? Another that hits immediately and you’ll smile all the way through with your clean hands in the air.

23) :00-:25 Beethoven’s 5th Symphony Might be a good time to dive into some classical music with your extra time.

24) 1:02-1:24 War Pigs - Black Sabbath The 1st 4 lines never get old. Ozzy in his prime - what a band.

25) :32-:55 Tequila - The Champs A classic! Lots of people enjoying a few spirits at home during quarantine, so this classic party tune seems appropriate - you can even do the Pee Wee Herman!

26) :52-1:12 Space Oddity - David Bowie Possibly the best call on this list - you can literally let Bowie count off your 20 seconds to liftoff!!!

27) 2:25-2:53 Perfect Strangers - Deep Purple One of the greatest riffs ever - if you know, you know.

28) 2:35-2:47 Tattooed Love Boys - Pretenders The last 22 seconds of a song that captures all of why this band was so awesome and what was so special about this masterful debut album.

29) 2:05-2:32 Whip It - Devo The chorus repeats here on this gem…has there ever been a band like Devo?

30) 2:38-3:03 Microphone Fiend - Eric B & Rakim When Rakim calls his shot on the rhyme that closes it out…

31) :48-1:18 You Make Lovin’ Fun - Fleetwood Mac Such a gorgeous soaring chorus by Christie McVie - good for the soul, and believing in miracles is a good thing.

32) :14-? Mediate - INXS I guess you can go as long as you want on this one - see if you can memorize the whole thing!

33) 2:00-2:32 All Along The Watchtower - The Jimi Hendrix Experience The best part of the best solo by the best guitarist on the best Bob Dylan cover.

34) :56-1:18 Raspberry Beret - Prince & The Revolution I can’t take credit for this one - my daughter Lacey said she heard the chorus is exactly 20 seconds - it’s actually 24, but it’s perfect for a happy handwashing.

35) 1:27-1:51 Watching The Wheels - John Lennon It’s just a fun chorus to sing and we can relate to this - just watching the wheels go round right? The simple things…

36) :51-1:12 Pink Houses - John Cougar Mellencamp Give me this over Born In The USA any day for a chorus about America that gets me pumped.

37) :06-:28 Do You Love Me? - KISS That first verse is just so killer - quintessential Kiss with two “Do You Love Me’s” on the end that takes you to 22 seconds.

38) :24-:44 What Is And What Should Never Be - Led Zeppelin A chorus worth belting out - 20 seconds eases you right into the “Oooohhh....”

39) 2:13-2:35 The Ocean - Led Zeppelin Okay fine I added another Zeppelin… the only legit Led Zeppelin la la la singalong is 22 seconds!

40) 1:25-1:45 Creeping Death - Metallica A perfect 20 second chorus for those of us who remember how great Metallica once was…

41) 1:06-1:30 A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You - The Monkees Classic underrated Davey Jones sung Monkeys tune that makes me smile. I like the second time for the chorus so you can belt out the “I SAY GI-UH-IRL!”

42) 1:05-1:30 True Faith - New Order A great chorus by such an amazing band! No way was I going to leave New Order off this list.

43) :47-1:17 Cracklin’ Rosie - Neil Diamond The live version from Hot August Night - actually 30 seconds when you include the “PLAY IT NOW’s” and you DO want to include the PLAY IT NOW’S…

44) 1:07-1:27 In Bloom - Nirvana Repeat of the chorus with the “yeah” on the end.

45) :11-:34 Feel Good Hit Of The Summer - Queens Of The Stone Age Run through the list of drugs 4 times and you’re good… I mean that’s what the amazing scientists are doing around the world to fight this virus - okay well maybe not these drugs…

46) 1:07-1:30 It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (and I feel fine) - R.E.M. A timely title but with an optimistic slant?  The second verse will give you a nice project to learn the words and it’s 23 seconds!

47) :56-1:16 Psycho Killer - Talking Heads Always a fun chorus to sing with the “fa fa fas” and the “ay ay ays!”

48) 1:41-2:01 What I Got - Sublime The last rhyme starting with “Why I don’t cry when my dog runs away…” is exactly 20 seconds

49) 1:08-1:30 Every 1’s A Winner - Ty Segall Ty Segall’s cover of Hot Chocoate’s “other” hit is such a jam… and the chorus is fun to belt out - one of my favorites to play live!

50) 1:12-1:39 Won’t Get Fooled Again - The Who Let’s hope so right…? The chorus hits the 20 second mark at the end of the word “Playyyyeee….” but you’ll probably want to keep right on washing through “We Don’t Get Fooled Again!!!”

So there you go! 50 snippets for you to wash your hands to! I hope you enjoyed these and feel free to share this and add your own in the comments, but most importantly - stay safe and be nice to each other.
